Smith Micro's Internet Solutions Division Builds Web-Based Document Management System for Toshiba Subsidiary
ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Internet Solutions
Division of Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a developer and
marketer of a wide range of software and service solutions for the wireless
and Internet markets, today announced a contract to build an online document
management system for Toshiba America Medical Systems (TAMS).
Utilizing
special Smith Micro methodology designed to speed the process of creating
corporate intranet applications, the system will give more than 500 users in
the Service and Support organization instant browser-based access to thousands
of documents containing technical support documentation for TAMS' medical
imaging products. This Intranet Framework service offering, frees in-house staff of the need
to learn the complexities of Microsoft Site Server and build a corporate
intranet from scratch.
Smith Micro installs the infrastructure and makes the
initial connections, providing pre-built functionality for applications such
as intranet-based content management, corporate phone book, document sharing
and e-mail feedback.
The pre-packaged solution provides hours of
installation, configuration and knowledge transfer.
The customer then
populates the application with information from various sources, employing
Site Server's easy-to-use submission, posting and approval process.
If
requested by the customer, Smith Micro also offers additional consulting
services after delivery of the Intranet Framework solution. ``We needed a solution that would eliminate the need to distribute hard
copies and CDs of our technical documentation and also make it easy for our
staff to find the specific information they require without having to hunt
through hundreds of pages,'' said Dave Croteau, manager of TAMS' InTouch
customer support center.
``Smith Micro offered a low-cost web-based solution
that will give us the benefit of point-and-click search capabilities for
documents as well as images, and their Intranet Framework strategy will enable
us to deploy the system months sooner than if we had built the entire
application internally.'' Content will be contributed by TAMS' employees from throughout the
organization and will be accessible from wherever it is stored, whether on the
company's Windows or AS/400 file servers, Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle
databases, or external Web sites.
File formats ranging from documents and
spreadsheets to images and HTML files can be submitted without reformatting or
recoding. ``Many companies today lack sufficient IT staff to undertake major intranet
projects, so our Intranet Framework offering is designed to eliminate the
initial legwork that sometimes can stall these kinds of projects
indefinitely,'' said Chris Lippincott, General Manager of the Internet
Solutions Division of Smith Micro.
``For customers like Toshiba, we are able
to provide a jumpstart that gets the project off the ground, removes most of
the development burden, and allows them to spend more time concentrating on
their core competencies.'' About Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. With headquarters in Tustin, Calif., Toshiba America Medical Systems is a
